9/11 Tunnels to Towers 5k

🚒 Congratulations, Deputy Chief Andrew Doughty!

The St. Albans Fire Department is proud to recognize and congratulate Deputy Chief Andrew Doughty on another outstanding finish in the Tunnels to Towers 5K in Portland, Maine.

The Tunnels to Towers 5K is held in locations throughout the country and raises funds to honor and support the families of military members and first responders who were killed or catastrophically injured in the line of duty, while ensuring that we Never Forget the sacrifices made on September 11, 2001.

The race commemorates the sacrifice of FDNY Squad 1 Firefighter Stephen Siller, who was off duty on September 11, 2001. After learning that the tunnels from Brooklyn to Manhattan were closed, Stephen ran on foot toward the Twin Towers in his full firefighter turnout gear. He ultimately gave his life while responding to the attacks.

Each runner in the race runs in honor and memory of an FDNY firefighter who made the ultimate sacrifice on 9/11. This year, Deputy Chief Doughty ran with the name of Firefighter Terel Coleman, carrying his memory every step of the way.

Andrew has participated in the Portland Tunnels to Towers 5K annually as a way to demonstrate his appreciation, respect, and dedication to the brothers and sisters who put their lives on the line every time the tones drop.

This year, Deputy Chief Doughty completed the 5K in an impressive 23:35, finishing as the first firefighter across the finish line for the turnout division. Even more remarkable, this marks the third year that Andrew has finished first among participating firefighters.

Moments like this reflect the dedication and character of the members of the St. Albans Fire Department. Andrew’s commitment to honoring those who made the ultimate sacrifice is a tremendous credit to our department and serves as an example to us all.

His dedication, determination, and perseverance are an inspiration — reminding us that the sacrifices of September 11th must never be forgotten.
